Topic 4 Flashcards
In Ontario, where are the DNA analyses conduct

what is a multi locus genotype?
when multiple loci are included when analyzing genotype.
The probability of observing any specific multilocus genotype is lower when you add more loci. This is because you add more possible combinations of individual genotypes to the multilocus genotype.
In North America, what background data set is used?
The CODIS System (Combined DNA Index System)
It was developed by The US FBI, and Canada contributes to this database. Currently has DNA fingerprints (multilocus genotypes) from 12.3M individuals. 13 Core u-sat loci are required for the inclusion of an individual in this database.
What does multilocus genotype frequency mean in forensic science?
Shows if there is a match between the suspect’s DNA and DNA from the crime scene (the probability of randomly choosing and individual from the population with a suspect’s multilocus genotype)
What is the Canadian DNA data bank?
Canadian National DNA Data Bank: in 1998, there was a legislation passed allowing judge to order convicts with serious chargers to submit their DNA samples.
This has helped charge these criminals with numerous additional charges.
Problems with the multilocus genotype frequency method?
- Different ethnic groups have different genotypic frequencies (they account for that though by adjusting for it)
- Police has used rigged evidence to charge someone innocent
- twins
