Topic 3.3 - Mass Transport In Plants Flashcards
1
Q
What do plants require water for?
A
Photosynthesis and a transport medium for mineral ions.
2
Q
Which vessel carries water in a plant?
A
Xylem.
3
Q
How is the xylem adapted for its function?
A
- The cells are dead. If they were living they would have absorbed the water so it is important they’re dead.
- The end cell wall walls have been removed so there is a continuous flow.
- They have lignin which strengthens the walls (prevents them from collapsing) due to negative pressure when water is pulled up.
