Topic 3.3 Flashcards
Hydrocarbons are chemical compounds composed of what atoms?
C and H atoms
The main source of hydrocarbon is crude oil. It is used as:?
Fuel and feedstock for chemical industry
Explain whether methane (CH4) or butane (C4H10) has a higher boiling point
C4H10 is larger and has more mass than CH4. The dispersion force operating between C4H10 is stronger than the one operating between CH4 and requires larger amount of energy to be disrupted. C4H10 has a higher boiling point.
features of complete combustion
Complete combustion requires sufficient O2, products are CO2 and H2O, max energy output, blue flame
Write a balanced chemical equation of C8H18 complete combustion.
2C8 + 25O2 –> 16CO2 + 18H2O
Difference between alkane and alkene?
Alkanes are saturated and have C-C bonds only. Alkenes are unsaturated and have atleast one C=C bond.
State the chemical formula for pentane and explain whether it is saturated or unsaturated.
C5H12 and its saturated because its an alkane.
How does alkene addition reaction occur?
Atoms are added to an alkene molecule by breaking a C=C bond and forming a new bond
Explain structural formula and skeletal structure
Structural formula shows the full strcutre while skeletal structure has stricks that represent C and H.
Whats a functional group
Group of one or more atoms within organic compounds and have distinctive chemical properties
Define alkyl
Functional group with saturated hydrocarbon
Formula for methyl and ethyl
Methyl: CH3 Ethyl: C2H5 or CH2CH3
What does an alcohol functional group contain?
OH
What functional groups are present in aldehyde?
Double bond O and H
What functional group is present in ketone
Double bond O
