Topic 3.1 Measuring disease mortality Flashcards
What are the three different types of mortality rates?
Crude rates
Specific rates
Standardised (adjusted) rates
What is a mortality rate?
Total number of deaths reported during a given time interval from a the population from which the deaths occured
How do you calculate crude mortality rate?
number of deaths/total population
How do you calculate specific mortality rates?
number of deaths due to a specific causes/total mid-year population
How do you calculated age specific mortality rate?
number of deaths in age group/total population in that age group
How do you calculate the age standardised mortality rate?
Total expected deaths in standard population/ standardised population)
how do you calculated standardised mortality ratio (SMR) ?
observed deaths/expected deaths
What does an standardised mortality ratio (SMR) > 1 mean?
Deaths in the study population are expected to be greater than the standard population
What does a standardised mortality ratio (SMR) < 1 mean?
Deaths in the study population are expected to be less than the standard population
How do you calculate the case fatality ratio?
Deaths due to disease/number of cases due to same disease
How do you calculate survival rate?
no. patients alive after specific period of time after diagnosis/number of pts diagnosed
