Topic 3: Types of Long Term Memory Flashcards
who proposed the types of LTM and in what year
Tulving (1972)
what are the 3 types of LTM
- Procedural
- Episodic
- Semantic
what is procedural memory
Procedural memory includes our memory of performed motor tasks/skills
give 3 features of procedural memory
- non declarative (does not involve conscious thought)
- immune to forgetting
- they are stored in the cerebellum
what is semantic memory
semantic memories are our store of general knowledge about the world, including the meaning of words, objects, places, and people
give 2 features of semantic memory
- declarative (involves conscious thought)
- they are stored in the left prefrontal cortex
what is episodic memory
- storing information about time stamped events
- involves conscious thought
- declarative
- Right prefrontal cortex
similarities and differences between procedural and semantic
similarities: none
differences:
- procedural is non declarative and unconscious but semantic is declarative and conscious
- procedural memories are stored in cerebellum but semantic memories are stored in left prefrontal cortex
similarities and differences between procedural and episodic
similarities:
- unlikely to forget
differences:
- procedural memories stored in cerebellum but episodic memories are stored in right prefrontal cortex
similarities and differences between episodic and semantic
similarities:
- both are declarative and conscious
differences:
- episodic memories are stored in right prefrontal cortex but semantic memories are stored in left prefrontal cortex
- episodic memories are timestamped but semantic aren’t
