topic 3 sclera Flashcards
what are the 3 functions of the sclera?
- protection
- support
- anchorage for structures
what is the composition of the sclera?
75% collagen
25% proteins
how many opening does sclera have?
several openings to allow blood vessels and nerves to enter (not continuous)
where is the sclera the weakest?
at the site of attachment of the recti muscles
what is the blood supply of the sclera?
anteriorly supplied by ciliary arteries
posteriorly supplied by circle of haller-zinn (formed by posterior ciliary artery)
what is the nerve supply of the sclera?
trigeminal nerve (5) long (post) and short (ant) ciliary verves
what are the 3 layers of the sclera?
episclera. scleral stroma, lamina fusca
what are 3 characteristics of episclera?
- anterior most layer
- highly vascularized
- tenon’s capsule is anterior to this layer
what are 3 characteristics of scleral stroma?
- made of collagen fibres of variable thickness and random arrangement
- this increases strength of stroma and makes it opaque
- avascular
what are 4 characteristics of lamina fusca?
- inner most layer
- formed by collagen fibres
- pigmented bc of melanocytes
- separated from choroid by perichoroidal space
