Topic 3 - Quantitative Chemistry Flashcards
What is the Law of conservation of mass?
No atoms are lost or made during a chemical reaction so the mass of the products = mass of the reactants
What is the symbol for relative formula mass?
Mr
What is relative formula mass of a compound?
The sum of the relative masses of the atoms in the numbers shown in the formula
What is the relative formula mass in a balanced chemical equation?
Sum of Mr of reactants in quantities shown = sum of Mr of products in quantities shown
What is the relative atomic mass symbol?
Ar
What is the Ar (relative atomic mass) of an element?
The mass number
How can you find the Mr of a compound?
By adding up the relative atomic masses of all atoms in its molecular formula
What is yield.?
The amount of product that’s produced in a reaction
What is the percentage yield equation?
% yield = actual mass / max. Theoretical mass x 100
What does the atom economy mean in a reaction?
Shows the amount of starting materials that end up a useful products
What is the atom economy equation?
Atom economy = Mr of useful products / Mr of all reactants x 100
What is the concentration formula?
Concentration = number of moles of solute (mol) / volume (mol/dm^3)
What is titration?
A method used to prepare salts if the reactants are soluble
