A

The Chief has control over resource production, he accumulates goods and materials, gives some to his people (equally) and keep a huge chunk for himself.

A

If he distributes unequally and doesn’t keep any of the resources for himself he will become vulnerable and will lose his power. If he doesn’t give out enough, the same will happen. He will be overthrown or possibly killed.

A

A

The manipulation of ideologies, symbols and beliefs of the people. If they think you are meant to be a leader for whatever reason, they will believe just about whatever you say.

A

The use of force or threat.

A

Large territory, urbanism, complex division of labor, taxes and writing and science.

A

Monumental architecture, complex social hierarchy, official religion, long distance trade and finally the surprise one that isn’t really needed, War and militarism.

A

A state does not need to have an army or military as long as they have strong allies that do.

A

Agriculturalist villages, rise in population, no more land/no possibility to expand, fighting amongst Chiefdoms to get food and land. Whoever wins gets this. Food can run out and people can go hungry but the political complexity increases.

A

Also known as a country, they are composed of many nations. A nation can cross any border (like Roms/Gypsies.)

A

Also known as an ethnic group, a nation is a group of people who share common history, culture, religion, language, etc… The group of people you have a sense of belonging with because of what you share.
