Topic 3 - Motion And Forces Flashcards
What is speed?
How fast you’re going
What is velocity?
Speed and a direction
What is the formula for speed
Speed = distance/time
What is acceleration?
How quickly velocity is changing. It has a magnitude and direction.
What is the formula for acceleration
Acceleration = change in velocity/time taken
What is the unit of acceleration and why?
M/s^2 because it metres/(seconds x seconds)
What does the gradient represent in a distance time graph?
Speed
What does a flat section on a distance time graph represent?
It’s stopped
What does a downhill section represent on a distance time graph
It’s going back towards the starting point
What does a steepening curve represent on a distance time graph
It’s speeding up
What does a levelling off curve represent on s distance time graph ?
Slowing down
How do you work out the gradient on a graph?
Vertical height/ horizontal distance
What does gradient represent on a velocity time graph
Acceleration
What does a flat section represent on a velocity time graph
Steady speed
What does a steep gradient represent?
The steeper the gradient the greater the acceleration or deceleration
What does an uphill section on a velocity time graph represent?
Acceleration
What does a downhill section of a velocity time graph represent
Deceleration
How do you work out distance from a velocity time graph
The area underneath any section is equal to the distance travelled in that time interval
What does a curve represent in a velocity time graph
Chang in acceleration
What does the length of an arrow represent on a force diagram
Size of the force
What does it mean if all arrow on a force diagram are the same size?
Either stationary or moving at a steady speed
What does it mean if arrows on a force diagram are different sizes?
Acceleration or deceleration
What are sped and velocity measured in?
M/s
