Q

What is static electricity?

A

It’s charges that are not free to move. This causes them to build up in one place and often ends with a spark or a shock when they do finally move.

Q

What is a build up of static caused by?

A

Friction. When two insulating materials are rubbed together electrons will be scraped off one and dumped on the other. This’ll leave a positive static charge on one and a negative charge on the other. Only electrons can move not protons.

Q

Give some common examples of electrostatic phenomena

A

Clothing crackles - when synthetic clothes are dragged over each other electrons scrape off. They then get attracted which can cause shocks.

Car shocks - charge can build up between ur clothes and the car seat. The friction causes electrons to be scraped off. Then when u touch the car door the charge flows through you.

Q

how are charged objects attracted to uncharged objects

A

If an object is negatively charged it will stick to something even tho it has no charge because the charges on the wall can move a little. The electrons repel the electrons in the object. This leaves the protons near the surface so it is attracted to them and sticks to the object.

Q

What is the nucleus?

A

The bundle of protons and neutrons in the centre of an atom. It’s tiny but makes up most of the mass of the atom.

Q

How do Electrostatic sprayers work?

A

The spray gun is charged which charges up all the small drops of paint. Each paint drop repels all of the others since they have the same charge do you get a fine spray. They object painted it given an opposite charge so it attracts the fine spray of pain.

Q

What are the dangers of static electricity ?

A

Fuel filling.

As fuel flows out of the filter pipe static can build up. This can easily lead to a spark which may cause an explosion.

Q

How can electrostatic problems be solved?

A

By earthing the object.

This just means connecting the object to the ground using a conductor. This provides an easy route for static charges to travel into the ground.

Q

What is electric current?

A

Rate of flow of charge.

17
Q

What is charge carried by?

A

Electrons

18
Q

Why are metals good conductors?

A

They have free electrons which are able to move.

19
Q

What is the formula for charge?

A

Charge = current x time.

20
Q

What type of current do cells and batteries supply?

A

Direct current (D,C)

21
Q

What is direct current?

A

Current that keeps flowing in the same direction.
