Scope of nursing practice

Four elements of negligence
- Duty.
- Breach of duty.
- Proximate cause or causal connection.
- Damages or injuries.
Malpractice
A specific type of professional negligence that occurs when the standard of care that can be reasonably expected from professionals is not met.
Assault
The threat or attempt to inflict effective physical contact to a person.
Battery
The invasion of a person’s privacy by unpermitted touching.
False imprisonment
The unlawful intentional confinement of another within fixed boundaries so that the confined person is conscious of or harmed by the confinement.
Autonomy
A patient’s right to self-determination without outside control; the freedom to make choices and decisions about one’s own care without interference, even if those decisions are not in agreement with those of the health care team.
