TOPIC 3- INFECTION AND RESPONSE Flashcards
What are pathogens
microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease , cause communicable diseases that can spread to both plants and animals
What are bacteria
bacteria are very small cells which produce toxins to make us feel ill
what are viruses
viruses are not cells they reproduce rapidly and the cell damage make us feel ill
what are protists
parasites live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage .
Name three viral diseases
measles is a viral disease spread by droplets develops a red rash and is treated with a vaccinated
HIV is a virus caused by sexual contact that damages your immune system
TMV happens in plants , causes discolouration so cannot carry out photosynthesis
fungal disease
rose black spot , cause the leaves to turn yellow and cannot carry photosynthesis , can be treated with fungicides
disease caused by protists
malaria causes repeating episodes of fevers that can be fatal , the spread can be stopped by stopping the mosquitoes from breeding
name two bacterial diseases
salmonella , caused by food poisoning , causes fever diarrhoea caused by toxins from bacteria . prevented from cleaning surfaces
gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease , will cause pain when urinating and is treated with an antibiotic called penicillin
how does your immune system attack pathogens .
white blood cells engulf foreign cells , rapidly produce antibodies to find all bacteria and viruses , producing antitoxins to counteract the invading bacteria
