Topic 3 - Compounds Form According to a Set of Rules Flashcards
What is a compound?
Created when two or more elements combine chemically to produce a new substance.
What is chemical formula?
Specifies which elements and how many of each are in a compound.
What did Guyton de Morveau create?
He created a naming system for chemicals, The metallic element name is written first followed by the non-metallic elements.
What is an ionic compound?
Pure substances created as an outcome of the attracction between particles of opposite charrges which are called ions.
What is a polyatomic ion?
It means few ions can also create when certain atoms of elements combine.
How do you name ionic compounds?
- Use the full name of the metal on first.
- Put the name of the non-metal last and change ending to -ide.
- If anion a polyatomic ion the name is not changed.
- If the cation has more than 1 positive charge, specify which ion is being used with roman numerals.
What is a molecular compound?
When non-metals merge or combine.
What are some properties of molecular compounds?
Low melting & boiling poiints
They are poor conductors of electricity however good insulators
They can be solids, liquids, gases at room temperature
What do you do when naming molecular compounds?
- Use the full name of the first element and the most metal-like goes first
- Put name of the second element last and change the ending to ide.
