Topic 1 - Matter can be described and organized by its physical and chemical properties Flashcards
What is evaporation?
Change from a liquid to a gas.
What is melting?
Change from a solid to a liquid.
What is condensation?
Change from a gas to a liquid.
What is freezing?
Change from a liquid to a solid.
What is WHMIS?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What is physical properties?
Describes the appearance and composition of a substance.
What is a physical change?
Any change not involving a change in the substance`s chemical identity. (can be reversed)
What are the few physical properties of matter?
Melting Point, Boiling Point, Hardness, Malleability, Ductility, Crystal shape, Solubility, Density, Conductivity
What is Solubility?
Capability of a substance to be dissolved in another.
What is Density?
Amount of mass in a given volume of a substance.
What is Conductivity?
Capacity of a substance to conduct electricity or heat.
What is Hardness?
Ability to resist being scratched.
What is Malleability?
Rolled into sheets.
What is Melting Point?
Temperature which it changes from solid to liquid.
What is Boiling Point?
Temperature which it changes from liquid to gas.
What is Chemical Properties?
Explains how a substance relates with other substances.
. ph, Reactivity, Toxicity, Combustibility, Chemical, Behavior in air, Stability
What is a Pure Substance?
Made of only one kind of matter.
What is ductility?
Stretched into a long wire.
What is a Element?
Primary building blocks for all compounds.
What is a compound?
Two or more elements combine chemically
What is a Mixture?
A combination of pure substances
What is a Mechanical Mixture (Heterogeneous Mixture)?
Different substances which form up the mixture are visible.
What is a Solution (Homogeneous Mixture)?
Different substances which make up are not visibly split.
What is a Suspension?
Cloudy mixture which small particles of one substance are held within another.
What is a Colloid?
Cloudy mixture however particles of the suspended particles are tiny which cannot easily split out from the extra substance.
Ex. Milk, Ketchup, Whipped Cream, Butter, Jelly
What is a Chemical Change?
Happens when two or more materials act and form new materials. (cannot be reversed)
Ex. Combustion, mixing an acid and a base, Photosynthesis, Iron Rusting
What are Evidences of a Chemical Change?
Evidence of Chemical Change Change in Colour Change in Odour The Formation of Solid & Gas Thermal Energy Release or the Absorption of Heat Energy
What is an exothermic reaction?
It releases energy
What is an endothermic reaction?
absorb energy which is warm or cold
What is MRE?
Meals Ready To Eat
What are examples of a physical change?
- Changes of State
- Dissolving
- Absorption of water into a towel
- Crumpling a piece of paper
- Pulling copper into a thin wire
- Cutting a material
- Breaking glass
- Writing on a Sheet of Paper
What are examples of a chemical change?
Combustion, mixing an acid and a base, Photosynthesis, Iron Rusting
What is an element?
Basic building blocks of all compounds
