Topic 3: Climate Change Flashcards
Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a particular place or time. Short term changes
Climate
Long term pattern of weather conditions in a particular area, typically over 30 or more years
Earths Energy Budget
refers to the balance between the energy Earth receives from the sun and the energy it radiates back.
Solar Radiation
Light measured on a spectrum, different light being radiated interacts with the atmosphere in different ways
Visible Light
See with the human eye
Is absorbed and reflected by the Earth’s surface, reflected back into the atmosphere as infrared light
UV Radiation
Invisible form of radiation absorbed in the mesosphere, causing sunburns, skin cancer and eye damage
Infrared Radiation
Felt as heat, is absorbed by both the troposphere and the Earth’s surface.
Albedo
Albedo refers to the amount of light a surface reflects
Natural GH Effect
The atmosphere is made up of many GH gases that absorb the solar radiation in the troposphere. It maintains earths surface temp.
Solar Cycle
The amount of energy the sun produces forms a pattern. The cycle is 11 years containing solar minimum and solar maximum times.&
