Topic 3 - Acids Flashcards
What pH is an acid?
Below 7
What is the pH of a base?
Above 7
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water.
What is produced when a base and an acid react together?
A salt and water
What are the uses of salts?
Fertilisers
Colouring agents in things like fireworks
What acid does your stomach produce and why?
Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It produces it to help with digestion. The acid breaks down the food. It also helps to kill bacteria which makes it less likely to get food poisoning.
What causes indigestion and how can it be treated?
If you have too much stomach acid you get indigestion. To help treat this you take an indigestion tablet that contains a base. This neutralises some of the excess acid.
How do you test which types of indigestion remedies are the best?
Crush up at least 2 types of remedy put one in one glass of water and the other in another glass of water. Then put universal indicator in. Add Hydrochloric acid until the water is neutralised. Measure how much acid you have used before it was neutralised. The one with the most acid used is the best.
What do you get if you react Hydrochloric acid and a metal oxide?
That metal chloride and water
What do you get if you react sulphuric acid with a metal oxide?
That metal sulphate an water
What do you get if you react nitric acid with a metal oxide?
That metal nitrate and water
What is produced when you react an acid and a metal carbonate?
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
What does electrolysis mean?
Splitting up with electricity
What type of current does electrolysis use?
Direct current
How do you test for chlorine?
You out damp blue litmus paper into the smaller test tube and it should turn pink then bleach white.
