Q

What acid does your stomach produce and why?

A

Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It produces it to help with digestion. The acid breaks down the food. It also helps to kill bacteria which makes it less likely to get food poisoning.

Q

What causes indigestion and how can it be treated?

A

If you have too much stomach acid you get indigestion. To help treat this you take an indigestion tablet that contains a base. This neutralises some of the excess acid.

Q

How do you test which types of indigestion remedies are the best?

A

Crush up at least 2 types of remedy put one in one glass of water and the other in another glass of water. Then put universal indicator in. Add Hydrochloric acid until the water is neutralised. Measure how much acid you have used before it was neutralised. The one with the most acid used is the best.

Q

How do you test for hydrogen?

A

You put a lit splint into a test tube with the gas in and you should hear a squeaky pop.

16
Q

How do you test for oxygen?

A

You put a glowing splint into a test tube with the gas in and it should relight.

17
Q

What does electrolysis of salt water produce?

A

Chlorine

18
Q

What is chlorine used for?

A

Treat water supplies
Make bleach
It’s used to make the polymer poly(chloroethene) - pvc

20
Q

What does electrolysis of water produce?

A

Hydrogen and oxygen

21
Q

What does oxidising mean?

A

Provides oxygen which allows other materials to burn more fiercely.

22
Q

What does highly flammable mean?

A

Catches fire easily

23
Q

What does toxic mean?

A

Can cause death either by swallowing, breathing in, or absorption through skin

24
Q

What does harmful mean?

A

Like toxic but not quite as dangerous

25
Q

What does irritant mean?

A

Not corrosive but can cause reddening or blistering to the skin.

26
Q

What does Corrosive mean?

A

Attacks and destroys living tissues, including eyes and skin.
