Equality Act
Prevents discrimination in the workplace and makes it illegal to discriminate against workers on 9 protected characteristics.
Impact:
- Business may face legal action if they fail to follow the Equality Act
- Anti-discrimination and harassment policies must be in place
- Adaptations to the workplace may be necessary to make it accessible
- Bad publicity may result in a negative image
- Legal requirement to investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment or victimisation at work
- Staff training may be required on discrimination prevention/awareness
Health and Safety at Work Act
Covers health and safety in the workplace.
Impact:
-Provide training and instruction to employees on safety issues
- Provide and maintain machinery and equipment
- Have an up-to-date health and safety policy and share it with staff
- Provide protective clothing or safety equipment
- Carry out risk assessments
- Failing to comply with health and safety regulations may cause the business to be fined or shut down
- Staff members suffering an injury at work could take legal action against the business and receive financial compensation
National Minimum/Living Wage
National Minimum Wage is the minimum pay per hour a worker is entitled to.
National Living Wage is the minimum pay per hour a worker over 25 is entitled to.
Impact:
- Against the law to pay below the national living wage or the national minimum wage
- Increased minimum wage may increase costs
- Bad publicity if a business is found in breach of
regulations
- Employees may take out grievances against their employer if they are underpaid
- The maximum fine for non-payment is £20,000 per worker
