Some enzymes can actually catalyse multiple reactions, so lock and key isn’t applicable. According to the induced fit model, as the substrate approaches the enzyme. It induces conformational change in the active site to fit substrate. This stresses the substrate, reducing the activation energy of the reaction

A change to the conformation of a protein. For enzymes, this change in conformation means a change in the active site, changing shape so that substrate is no longer able to bind to it.
