Topic 2.2 - Ecosystem services Flashcards
Ecosystem services in neighbourhoods
what are provisioning services?
tangible resources that ppl can get from ecosystems. li ke food water and wood
what are regulating services
benefits obtained from the regulation of ecosystem processes including microclimate regulation, flood mitigation, and air and water quality control
What are microclimate regulation
- the control and management of the local climate within a specific area or environment.
- involves manipulating various factors such as temperature, humidity, air quality, and sunlight to create a favorable and comfortable microclimate for specific purposes
what are cultural services
non-material benefits ppl obtain from ecosystems and include aesthetic experiences, education and recreation
what are supporting services
services necessary for the functioning of all other ecosystem services, including soil formation, ollination and photosyntheses
what are the diff regulating sefvices
regulating the local climate, regulating the water flows, regulating local air quality
why are ecosystems important
these sevices are critical to our survival and their benefits are optimised when we have a healthy and thriving natural environment
what are the diff regulating services
regulating the local climate, regulating the water flows, regulating local air quality
example of regulating local climate
forests can help to cool areas by generating rainfall
example of regulating water flows
parks reduce surface runoff by retaining water in soil, drains,
example of regulating local air qualityy
trees remove air pollutants in the air
what are example of cultural services
natuure reserve is a place of recreation, SJC garden provides educational and aesthetic purpose,
how does soil formation help
it ensures that human activites such as agriculture can take place
how is soil formed
when micro-organisms and physical processes decompose organic matter and break them down into smaller particles
