Topic 1.3 - Relationship between locations in neighbourhoods Flashcards
Relationship between locations in nighbourhoods
Regions definition
- Areas with similar physical and/or human characteristics
- Regions can also be the sphere of influence of services, events, objects on other locations in the area
Spatial patterns definition
Spatial patterns is the non-random arrangements that are recognisable shape, clusters, repeated occurences inregular intervals
What symbols are important to see spatial distribution and what do they represent?
dots –> specific location like sch, transport nodes
lines –> continous routes like roads, drains, footpaths
polygons –> areas like towns, parks, water bodies
Does the purpose of the map affect the type of symbols used to represent things on the map? Explain.
yes. for eg, if purpose of map is to mainly show the features of a school, then a polygon used to represent the school area itself. However, if the map is used to show the map of a town, then a dot for a school will suffice.
Definition of spatial association
Spatial association is the tendency of a pair of services, events and object to be located near each other
Examples of spatially associated areas
lifts and stairs, mall and MRT, sch and MRT
Why are malls and MRTs found near each other?
Allows for easy access of places since it is common for people to travel via MRT to reach malls of various towns.
Why are MRT stations and bus interchanges often located near each other?
This increases the convenience of switching from one mode of transport to another, decreasing travel time
