Topic 2.1 Atoms And Reactions Key Words Flashcards
What is a mole?
The amount of any substance containing as many elementary particles as there are carbon atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon 12 isotope. That is 6.02×10 to the power of 23 particles.
What is the empirical formula?
The formula that shows the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound
What is the molecular formula?
A formula that shows the number and type of atoms of each element present in a molecule
What does anhydrous mean?
Containing no water molecules
What does hydrated mean?
A crystalline compound containing water molecules
What is water of crystallisation?
Water molecules that are bonded in a crystalline structure of a compound
What is percentage yield?
A comparison of the amount produced to what you actually got
Why is % yield never 100%?
1) Gaseous products
2) reversible reaction
3) Other reactions occurring
4) Isolating products loses
What is atom economy?
Demonstrates the % mass of all products that is desirable
What is an acid?
A species that releases H+ ions in solution and has pH lower than 7
What is an alkali?
A soluble base that dissolves in water forming OH- ions
What is a strong acid compared to a weak acid?
Weak = partial ionisation whereas strong = complete ionisation
What is the difference between a concentrated and dilute acid?
Concentrated = many H+ ions in a given volume whereas dilute = few H+ ions on a given volume
What is a neutralisation reaction?
A reaction in which an acid and base react together forming a salt
What is concordant result?
Results within 0.1cm3 of each other
