topic 2.1 Flashcards
what is the relationship between reactants and products and why
since matter cannot be created or destroyed during the reaction the total masses in grams of the reactants will be exactly equal to the masses of the products (mass economy)
what is percentage yield
experimental yield ( actual amount measured in experiment)/ theoretical yield (assumption of amount) * 100
why may the experimental yield differ from theoretical
inaccurate measurments of mass or volume
loss of reactant or product
accidental loss of chemicals, spillages
incomplete reaction of products
incorrect assumptions
side reactions occuring that are not considered
by product
An additional product that is formed alongside the desired product during a chemical reaction.
atom economy
A measure reaction efficiency in green chemistry, which compares the total mass of reactant atoms which end up as desired products, represented as a percentage.
formula for atom economy
molar mass of desired product/ mass of all reactants * 100%
the closer to 100% of atom economy…
the more efficient the reaction was
ideal conditions for an ideal gas
hight temp and low pressure
