Topic 2: Newton’s Laws Flashcards
What is the definition for inertia?
The resistance of any object to a change in its state of motion or rest.
What is newton’s first law?
An object at rest stays at rest, or an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction, unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
What is a resultant force?
The left over force when all the forces acting on the object have been combined.
When several forces act on an object, what are the two possible outcomes?
- Balanced forces
* Resultant force
As the resultant force of an object increases, what happens to the acceleration?
The size of acceleration also increases.
What is the mass of an object?
A measure of how much matter (stuff) there is in the object.
What is mass measured in?
KG
kilograms
What is Newton’s second law?
resultant force= mass x acceleration
F=ma
What is the weight of an object?
The force of gravity acting on the objects mass.
What is weight measured in?
N
newtons
What is gravitational field strength? (On Earth)
1kg=10N
What is the rule of gravity?
The more mass an object has, the greater it’s gravitational field will be.
Explain why a skydiver will accelerate when they initially jump out of an aircraft.
Their weight is a greater force than the air resistance, creating a resultant force downwards, causing them to accelerate.
Explain why the skydiver will eventually fall to a terminal speed.
Eventually, the force of air resistance equals to the weight of the skydiver. There is no resultant force, they move at a constant velocity.
What is an action force?
The force on one object.
What is a reaction force?
The force on the other object.
When the action and reaction forces are together, what are they called?
An interaction pair.
In which direction will the reaction force occur?
The opposite direction.
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
What is a contact force?
Forces that act between two object that are physically touching each other.
What is uniform motion?
Constant velocity.
What is drag?
A resistive force that acts against an object moving through air.
What is drag?
A resistive force that acts against an object moving through air.
What is thrust?
Thrust increases the velocity of an object.
What is air resistance?
Air resistance decreases the velocity of an object.
