Topic 2 - Map skills Flashcards
What do you call the way that something looks when viewed from the side?
side view
What do you call the way that something looks when viewed from above?
view from above
What do you call a view from above that shows how things are laid out?
plan view
What is a symbol?
A symbol is a picture, letter or colour that stands for something.
What is a map?
A map is a plan view or view from above that shows the position of things on the ground.
What is a map key?
A map key is a table that gives the meaning of symbols. This is used when symbols on a map are not so easy to understand.
What do you call the lines on a picture or a map that cross each other to form squares or rectangles?
grid lines
What is a grid?
A grid is a pattern formed by lines that cross each other. A grid makes it easy to find objects on maps or pictures.
What do you call the names that are given to parts of a grid on a map or picture, using letters and numbers (eg. 1, 2, 3, A, B, C)?
grid references (See page 30-33 for examples. Maybe you will have to decipher a picture or map in your test!)
If you do not have a grid, what other way is there to find a position on a map?
You can use the sun and compass directions.
Where does the sun come up?
In the east
Where dos the sun set?
In the west
Name all for compass directions.
North, south, east, west
What do you call a sparsely populated area?
Rural area
How can you use your body to determine compass direction?
When you go outside in the morning see where the sun rises. This is east. Turn your body so that your outstretched right arm points to the east. Your left arm will then point to the west, your face will be towards north, and your back will be towards south.
On a map, where is north?
At the top of the map.
Since a map is drawn on a flat piece of paper, does that mean that the world is flat?
No, the world is round (like a ball).
