Topic 2- Homeostasis In Organisms Flashcards
Homeostasis
Internal stability that organisms maintain
Photosynthesis
Process by which energy is stored in chemical bonds of organic molecules such as carbohydrates
Respiration
Process by which chemical energy is stored in nutrients that is released for use in cells.
Photosynthesis
Light energy + water + carbon dioxide —-> glucose + oxygen
Light energy + 6H2O + 6CO2 ——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Complex molecules and their functions
(ATP, DNA, carbohydrates, lipids, protein)
ATP- supplies energy for cells to run on
DNA- carries hereditary information
Carbohydrates & Lipids (fats and oils)- acts as a food reserve molecule
Protein- makes up enzymes and many cell parts
Enzymes
Special proteins that affect the rate of chemical reactions
Catalyst
Any substance that can affect the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being changed or used up during the reaction.
Function of Enzymes
Biochemical processes such as digestion (breakdown), synthesis (building up), cellular respiration (energy release) and photosynthesis (energy capture).
What conditions impact the rate of enzyme action?
Shape, Temperature, pH
