Define GDP
Gross Domestic Product
The total value of goods and services a country produces in a year. It is often given in US $
Define GNI
Gross National Income
The total value of goods and services produced by a country in a year, including income from overseas. It is often given in US $
Define birth rate
The number of live babies born per thousand of the population per year.
Define death rate
The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year.
Define fertility rate
The average number of births per woman.
Define infant mortality rate
The number of babies who die under 1 year old, per thousand babies born.
Define maternal mortality rate
The number of women who die due to pregnancy related problems per hundred thousand live births.
Define doctors per 1000 of population
The number of working doctors per thousand of the population.
Define the Gini coefficient
A measure of economic inequality. Countries are given a score between 0 (equal) and 1 (total inequality).
Define the Gender Inequality Index
A number that’s calculated using data on e.g. women’s education, access to jobs, political rights and health during pregnancy. The higher the score, the more inequality.
Define the HDI
Human Development Index
This is a number that’s calculated using life expectancy, education level (e.g. average number of years of schooling) and income per head. Every country has an HDI value between 0 (least developed) and 1(most developed).
Define CPI
Corruption Perceptions Index
A measure of the level of corruption that is believed to exist in the public sector on a scale of 1-100. The lower the score, the more corruption.
