Topic 2 - Climate Change - The Greenhouse Effect Flashcards
Define Greenhouse Effect
Traps the sun’s heat in the atmosphere and prevents it from escaping into space. This determines the temperature of Earth.
Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding the Earth.
Wavelength
Distance between identical points between two successive points.
Infrared radiation
Wavelengths that are longer than visible light.
Electromagnetic radiation
A kind of radiation where electric and magnetic fields vary simultaneously.
Ultraviolet Radiation
Wavelengths that are shorter than purple.
Visible Light
All colours of the rainbow
Infrared light
Wavelengths that are longer than red.
Radio waves
A type of electromagnetic radiation
Greenhouse gas
A gas which is trapped into the Earth’s atmosphere.
Earth’s energy budget
The amount of gas going in and out of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Climate
Long term changes in the environment of a location.
Weather
Short term changes in the environment of a location.
Precipitation
Water vapour condenses to water and falls from the clouds as rain, hail or snow.
