Topic 2 - Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding
Covalent Bonding
Two types of bonding
(in general)
Intramolecular and intermolecular
Covalent Bonding
Define the difference between Intramolecular and Intermolecular.
Intramolecular is a bonding within a molecule and intermolecular is bonding between molecules
What are the three types of chemical bonding?
Ionic (non-metal and metal), covalent (non-metal and non-metal) and metallic (metal and metal).
In ionic bonding you draw two atoms merging together with the electrons sharing. True or False?
False, the bond where it shares electrons is covalent bond.
In ionic bonding the two atoms merge to share electrons. True or False?
False. The bond which shares electrons is covalent bonding.
What is ionic bonding?
Electrons transfer from one atom to another to satisfy the needs of a full valence electron.
How would you describe metallic bonding visually?
Labels
Metallic cations are surrounded with delocalised electrons.
How can you know what ion would be created by the element.
Group number
What does the prefix “di-“ mean?
Two
(E.g. dioxide, diatomic)
Define polyatomic ions.
An ion formed from 2 or more atoms.
Which type of chemical bonding has the best electric conductivity?
Metallic bonding, because the lattice of delocalised electrons carry the charge.
What is an element?
Atom found on the periodic table.
What is a compound?
2 or more of different atoms.
E.g. CO2.
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms (same or different).
E.g. N2
