Topic 2 Flashcards
What do dendrites do
Receive impulses from receptor cells
What do axon terminals do
Pass impulses to other neurones
What are synapses
The connection between two neurones where there’s a synaptic gap where the neurotransmitter transmits impulse from one neurone to the next.
Reflex arc order
Receptors, sensory neurone, relay neurone (in spinal chord), motor neurone, effector
Why is myelination needed on motor neurones but not on neurones in the brain.
Motor neurones transmit info from central nervous system to effectors around the body.
Info is transmitted over greater distances than neurones in the brain.
Myelin sheath
Fatty layer around the motor neurone that speeds up neurotransmission speeds and stops other neurotransmissions interfering with the neurone.
What’s the role of the sensory neurone
Transmits electrical impulses from receptors in the sense organs to the central nervous system.
How are impulses transmitted at a synapse?
An electrical impulse stimulates the release of a neurotransmitter at the end of one neurone.
The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse.
Stimulating an electrical impulse in the next neurone.
