Topic 2 Flashcards
What are the advantages of using a toile when making a garment?
They show you how the product may look when it is finished and highlights any issues in the design
it allows you to estimate costs depending on production methods
it can help you evaluate if the number of pattern pieces can be reduced to make manufacture less expensive
What is a toile?
A prototype garment you should see it is made from cheap fabric such as calico
What is CAD
It stands for ‘Computer Aided Design’
Computers are used to develop designs, pattern making marker production and lay planning
What is CAM
Computer Aided Manufacture
What are the advantages of using CAD
It’s a time saver as it Reduces repetitive work
Computer networks improve communication between designers , clients and manufacturers this speeds up the design feedback loop
Decreases cost and increase efficiency as material quantities and costs are easily
What are the disadvantages of using CAD
It can be time consuming to teach staff how to use it
What is 2D modelling
Using the computer to give a virtual image of what the product may look like
What are the advantages of 2D modelling?
It saves time
it can create repeat patterns from a single image
you can view different colourways
What is 3-D modelling?
The computer is used to develop a 3-D representation of what the finished design may look like
What are the advantages of 3D modelling?
It can identify any faults in the design which will save money and time
Can adjust the scale of designs to suit the product
What is lay planning?
The fabric is laid out in a particular way to reduce waste of fabric
What are the advantages of lay planning?
They planning means less fabric is wasted which in turn means less money is wasted
also it makes the production of the garment is more sustainable and ethical
How is your lay panning used for in mass production and batch production
Because a large volume of garment must be made lay planning via the computer can be used to save time and ensure that the cutting out is accurate
If the fabric has a nap or Pile how would the planning have to be different than if it were a fabric that didn’t have this
If the fabric has a nap or pile like or corduroy, the pattern pieces must be arranged so that grain runs in the same direction for example top to bottom
What is a nap?
A raised fuzzy surface on fabrics
