Topic 1A: WHMIS and MSDS, Classifying Matter Flashcards
1
Q
WHMIS
A
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
2
Q
(M)SDS
A
(Material) Safety Data Sheets
3
Q
Toxic WHMIS Hazards
A
- acute toxicity (a small amount could kill you, whether through consumption or exposure)
4
Q
Harmful/Irritant WHMIS Hazards
A
- can cause an allergic reaction after repeated exposure to skin/respiratory system
5
Q
Corrosive WHMIS Hazards
A
- harsh chemicals can irreversibly damage/destroy living tissue
6
Q
Health Hazards
A
- chemicals can cause chronic (very serious) health issues such as asthma or even cancer
7
Q
Flammable Hazards
A
- flammables can ignite easily and burn rapidly
8
Q
Oxidizing Hazards
A
- a specific type of reactive that vigorously takes electrons from other substances
9
Q
Compressed Gas Hazards
A
- gases that can spontaneously burn or explode when released into the air (pyrophoric)
- can cause unconsciousness and death due to oxygen deprivation (asphxiant)
10
Q
Explosive Hazards
A
- things that can go boom
- reactive that causes a sudden release of gas, light, heat and pressure due to shock, pressure, spark, or high temp.
11
Q
Dangerous for the Environment Hazards
A
- indicates chemicals with acute/chronic aquatic toxicity
12
Q
Pure substances
A
- a substance that’s only made up of only one type of particle
13
Q
Compounds
A
- a type of pure substance
- a chemical combo of two or more elements
- can be broken down into elements through heat/electricity
14
Q
Elements
A
- a type of pure substance
- made up of one atom and cannot be broken down any further physically/chemically
15
Q
Mixtures
A
- combo of 2+ substances that aren’t chemically bonded
16
Q
Heterogenous (Mechanical mixtures)
A
- hetero = different
- physical combo of 2+ chemicals that aren’t equally mixed and the different parts can be seen
17
Q
Homogeneous (solutions)
A
- homo = same
- physical combo of 2+ chemicals mixed evenly and the different parts blend
18
Q
Physical Changes
A
- changes in state
- reversible
- don’t result in new substances being formed
ex. freezing/boiling/melting points, malleability, ductility, smell, taste
19
Q
Chemical Changes
A
- heat is absorbed or produced
- starting material is used up
- true colour change
- material with new properties is formed
- gas bubbles/precipitate forms in a liquid
- irreversible to change back in original form
ex. reaction with elements/acids, toxicity, combustibility
