Topic 1A - Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are polymers?
Large, complex molecules composed of long chains of monomers joined together.
What are monomers?
Smaller, repeating units of a polymer.
How does trexall slow cell division? It binds with the enzyme DR which is supposed to bind with folic acid, and this produces nucleotides (3)
Trexall is a competitive inhibitor. Less folic acid attaches to enzyme/ fewer enzyme-substrate complexes. Not enough nucleotides available for DNA replication.
What is the role of the disulfide bridge in forming the quaternary structure of an antibody?
Joins two different polypeptides.
What does starch break down into?
Maltose, not glucose idk why.
What are carbohydrates?
All carbohydrates contain CHO.
Monomers are monosaccharides.
Alpha and beta glucose are isomers. Draw the structures.
