Topic 19- The Skin And Temperature Control Flashcards
What are the 4 ways in which the body controls the temperature?
Vasodilation/ vasoconstriction
Hairs can stand up or lay flat
Production of sweat
Shivering
What labels of the structure of the skin can be asked in the exam?
Hair Erector muscle Sweat gland Sweat duct Sweat pore Blood vessels
What happens during vasodilation?
Blood vessels expand which allows blood to flow to the surface. This release heat by radiation
What happens during vasoconstriction?
The vessels constrict to cut the blood flow so less heat is lost
What happens when hairs stand ?
Air is trapped and acts as an insulator and stops heat loss
What happens when hairs lie flat?
Erector muscles relax and there is no longer an insulating layer. Heat is then lost
What happns when sweat is produced?
The sweat evaporates and releases heat
What happens when the body shivers?
Muscles contract to warm the blood
