Topic 18- Homeostasis, hormones and diabetes Flashcards
What are the 3 mains things that the body regulates?
Temperature, water content and blood sugar levels
What is negative feedback?
The way in which hormones control the level of factors
Why does the body control temperature?
So the reactions don’t go too fast or too slow.
Why do the body control the water content ?
So the reagents don’t become too dilute or concentrated
Why do the body control blood sugar levels?
Glucose is good for energy. However, it can damage cells if too concentrated. If there is no control over the blood sugar levels, it could result in diabetes
What are hormones?
Proteins that control the way the body reacts
Explain the cycle if blood sugars become too high
The pancreas makes insulin
Glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver
Then returns to normal
Explain the cycle if blood sugar levels are too low
The pancreas makes glucagon
Glucagon is transported in the blood
Glycogen in the liver is converted to glucose
Returns back to normal
What is diabetes?
A condition where the pancreas doesnt make any/ enough insulin
How is diabetes treated?
Maintain a low sugar diet
Insulin injection
How do we test for diabetes?
Benedict’s test:
Ass equal amounts of urine and Benedict’s reagent
Heat to 80 degrees
Changes colour from blue to green to amber to brick red
How is type 2 diabetes treated unlike type 1?
Tablets rather than being insulin dependant
