Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of EVEs

A

advantages:
-Higher magnification than optical LVA
up to 30x magnification!
-Minimal peripheral aberrations, less amount of light loss than LVA
-Can be used binocularly
-Natural working distance, good posture
-variable magnification (Can still be used even if the patient’s eye condition worsens)
-Simple image manipulation eg contrast reversal, Black and white. yellow on blue etc.

disadvantages:
-Expensive
-Need batteries / power supply
-Equipment may break down
-May be difficult to manipulate object eg sewing, due to depth of focus (short range of distances where object is sharply focused)

Q

What are some examples of sensory substitution?

A

Communication (tactile) -Braille

Communication (Auditory) -audiobooks, podcasts

Orientation and mobility -Symbol Canes To indicate visual impairment (white stripe for visual impairment, red for hearing impairment)

Orientation and mobility -Ultra-Cane Gives tactile feedback
(vibration) through the handgrip by using sonar to detect obstacles

Orientation and mobility - guide dogs

ORCAM– device able out loud to read test and recognise faces, products, object
