Topic 14 Flashcards
1
Q
A
Earliest lineages of nonvascular plants with three paraphyletic groups including liverworts, mosses, and hornworts
2
Q
Characteristics of Bryophytes
A
Lack vascular tissue and lignin
Small size
Lack of structure support tissues for growth
No true roots
No leaves
Unbranched
3
Q
Life Cycle of Byrophytes
A
Live most of it’s life as a haploid gametophyte and only exists for a short time as smaller diploid sporophytes that are dependent on the gametophyte
4
Q
Moss Life Cycle
A
- Spore generated into gametohyte (1n) composed of protonema and gametophore
- Haploid protonemata produce “buds” dividing by mitosis and growing to gametophores
- Sperm produced by Antheridia swim through a film of moisture to egg
- Archegonia produce egg for fertilization
- Fertilization occurs with water
5
Q
Antheridia
A
Moss structure that produce and release flagellated sperm
6
Q
Archegonia
A
moss structures that produce egg and are the site of fertilization
