Topic 13 Flashcards
Biotic Interactions
What are the barriers to herbivory?
- Bottom up Control of plants
- Top down-control of herbivores by predators
- Herbivore populations cannot track plant resource abundance
What is the class described example of plant control of herbivory?
Milkweed
What plant configurations distribute VOCs more effectively?
Herbivory rates drop if plants are clustered
What is a second role of plant VOCs?
They can produce VOCs that will bring predators that specialize on hunting certain herbivores
What is mast seeding?
The synchronous production of seeds at very variable levels by a population of plants.
What is a mast year or event?
A mast seeding event/year is a relatively very high seed production event.
What is the point of mast seeding?
It is good for the prevention of growth of herbivores through constant growth or immigration with available resources
