Topic 1.28-1.30 Covalent bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Explain how a covalent bond is formed
A
When non-metallic substances share pairs of electrons they form strong covalent bonds.
2
Q
What does covalent bonding result in?
A
It results in the formation of molecules. These may be small molecules, large molecules (such as polymers) or giant covalent structures (macromolecules)
3
Q
What is the order of magnitude of atoms and small molecules?
A
The order of magnitude is the typical size.
Simple molecular substances consist of molecules in which the atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds. Therefore, atoms are smaller than molecules.
