Topic 12 - Solids, liquid and gases Flashcards
What is the mathematical relation between Pressure and Temperature
𝑇 𝐾 = 𝑇(°C)+273
Under what conditions does this relation hold true? (3)
- The volume of the gas must remain constant.
- The amount (number of molecules) of the gas must remain unchanged.
- The gas should behave as an ideal gas (i.e., interactions between gas molecules should be negligible, and the gas should follow the kinetic theory assumptions).
Can you state any real-life application of this law? (1)
- Pressure cookers
How do the molecules move and collide?
- Molecules move in constant
random motion. - Molecules collide with each
other and with the walls of the
container.
Assumptions made? (3)
- Molecules have negligible volume.
- Collisions are elastic.
- No intermolecular force.
Relating properties like pressure and temp to molecular motion formula?
𝑇 𝐾 = 𝑇(°C)+273
Relating properties like pressure and temp to molecular motion?
As the temperature of the gas increases, the molecules start moving faster because they gain more energy.Motion is related to kinetic energy.
Absolute zero?
Temperature at which the molecules stop moving!!
Temp relation to pressure?
Temperature in Kelvin scale of a gas is proportional to average kinetic energy of its molecules.
What do molecules exert ?
- Molecules exert force and thus pressure (Pressure/Area) on the walls when they collide with them.
What is pressure of the gas related to?
the collisions of the molecules of gas with the walls of the container.
