TOPIC 12: ACID-BASE EQUILIBRIA Flashcards
What is a Bronsted-Lowry Acid?
A proton donor
What is a Bronsted-Lowry Base?
A proton acceptor
Definition of a strong acid and give an example
- Dissociate completely in water nearly all H+ ions are released.
- Example is HCL
Definition of a Weak Acid and give an example
- Dissociate only partially in water-some H+ ions are released
- Example is Ethanoic acid
What is a conjugated acid-base pair?
A pair that contains two species that can be interconverted by proton transfer
How does an acid produce H+ ions in solution
The acid reacts with water and donated a proton to form H3O+. A dative covalent bond is formed between one of the oxygens lone pairs in the water molecule and a hydrogen from the acid
Define a Monoprotic acid
Substance that donates one proton
Define a Monoprotic base/Monobasic
Substance that only accepts one proton
Define Diprotic acid
Substance that can donate two protons
Define Diprotic base
Substance that can accept two protons
Define Amphoteric. Give an example
Substance that can behave as an acid or a base
Example is Water
