Topic 11 - Polymers Flashcards
What is condensation polymerisation?
Formation of long chain molecules joining together with another small molecule (e.g. water) produced as well.
What is a monomer?
Atoms or small molecules that bond together to form more complex structures.
What is condensation polymerisation?
Formation of long chain molecules from lots of small molecules joining together with another small molecule (e.g. water) produced as well.
What are the 4 main types of monomer?
Sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleotides.
What is a polymer?
Large molecules made by chemically linking repeating monomers. (The monomer molecules are covalently bonded together)
What is an example of polymers?
Silk, wool, DNA, proteins, cellulose
What is a polypeptide?
A continuous, unbranched chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
DNA is a polymer made of…?
—sugar—phosphate—sugar—phosphate—
