Topic 10 - organic reactions Flashcards
What’s a functional group?
A particular group of atoms which are responsible for how the molecules react (eg. alcohols)
What’s an Alkene?
An unsaturated hydrocarbon
What’s the general formula for alkenes?
Cn H(2)n
What’s a homologous series?
A group of substances with the same general formula (eg. Alkanes or alkenes)
What do we seem when we react an alkene with bromine rather than an alkane with bromine?
The alkene made the bromine colourless when mixed, however the alkene didn’t change colour (didn’t react).
When alkenes react with steams, what environment is needed to produce alcohols?
High temperatures with an acid catalyst
When alkenes burn, do they burn with a smokier flame, or less smokier flame than alkanes?
Smokier flame than alkane, since they have a higher ratio of carbon to hydrogen
