Topic 10.2 Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a life supporting environment. It includes all of the organisms living in a particular area known as a community, as well as the non-living elements of that particular environment.
Biosphere
All life supporting environments on the earths surface.
Biome
Major ecosystems eg. tundra, forest, grassland
Habitat
Eg. tropical rainforest, coniferous forest
Microhabitats
Eg. under a log
Trophic levels
Each level of the food chain is called a trophic level.
Trophic levels: Producer
Makes their own food by photosynthesis eg. plants, algae (autotroph).
Trophic levels: Primary consumer
Eats the plants eg. animals (heterotrophs, herbivore)
Trophic levels: Secondary consumer
Carnivore
Trophic levels: Tertiary consumer
Predator, top carnivore
Trophic levels: Decomposers
Include bacteria ad fungi who break down the dead plants and animals urine and faeces.
Energy loss
-Energy loss is lost at trophic level
-Not all the animal can be eaten eg. fur, bones
-Not all of the nutrients can be digested eg. cellulose in humans
-Energy is lost by heat from movement
-Energy is lost from movement
-Energy is lost in focus and urine
Ecological pyramids: Pyramid of numbers
The number of organisms in each trophic level.
Ecological pyramids: Pyramid of biomass
Compares the mass of biological material at each trophic level.
Ecological pyramids: Pyramid of energy
Compares the amount of energy passing through each trophic level over a period of time.
