Topic 10 Flashcards
What do hormones control?
They control the onset of puberty, sperm production and the menstrual cycle
What two hormones are produced in the brain? (Female)
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Lutenising hormone (LH)
When a person reaches puberty, what is stimulated in the brain and by what?
The pituitary gland by a releaser hormone produced in the hypothalamus of the brain.
What two hormones are produced in the brain? (Male)
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH)
In males, what is the role of FSH?
It promotes sperm production
In males, what is the role of ICSH?
It stimulates the production of testosterone
What does testosterone stimulate and activate?
it stimulates sperm production ad activates the prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
What will rising levels of testosterone cause?
A reduction in release of FSH and ICSH from the pituitary gland by means of negative feedback.
How long is the average menstrual cycle?
28 Days
What 2 hormones are produced in the ovary?
Oestrogen and Progesterone
What is the role of FSH in the 1st half of the menstrual cycle?
FSH stimulates the development of a follice and the production of oestrogen by the follice in the follicular phase.
Name the first phase of the menstrual cycle.
The follicular phase
Name the second phase of the menstrual cycle.
The luteal phase.
What is the role of oestrogen in the 1st half of the menstrual cycle?
Proliferation of the endometrium in the uterus preparing it go implantation and affects the consistency of the cervical mucus making it more easily penetrated by sperm.
Peak levels of oestrogen stimulate a surge in the secretion of LH. This surge in LH triggers ovulation
