Topic 1 Quiz Flashcards
Name five subcelluar structures in plant and animal cells
Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondria Ribosomes
What 3 other thing do plant cells have that animal cells don’t have
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
Cell wall
Why type of organism is bacteria?
Prokaryotes
Which gives a higher resolution, light microscope or electron microscope?
Electron microscope
What is cell differentiation?
How a cell is adapted to its specific role
Give three ways a sperm cell is adapted to its role
Has a tail which helps it swim
It’s thin shape makes it swim faster
Has lots of mitochondria to give it energy
How is a nerve cell adapted
They are long which means they cover more distance and have branched connections.
What are chromosomes?
Coiled up dna molecules
What is the cell cycle?
This is how cells divide. Before this they have to increase the amount of mitochondria and ribosomes. They then duplicate its own dna and then the chromosomes line up in the centre and cell fibres pull them apart. Membranes form around each group of chromosomes and the nucleus divides then the Cytoplasm and membrane divide.
What is mitosis used for?
Growth and repair
What is the name of the process where bacteria divides?
Binary fusion.
What is the diffusion?
The spreading out of particles from a high to a low concentration.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane to a region of lower concentration.
Name three substances that can diffuse and two that can’t
Can-oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
Can’t-starch and protein
How are the alveoli adapted to gas exchange?
Large surface area
Very thin walls
Good blood supply
