What does Istoria mean?
Historical, biblical or mythological narrative.
Why were paintings ranked?
‘Hierarchy of genres’ ~ because it embodied Renaissance values about what constituted the ‘best’ types of art.

- The ranking is in descending order of importance: History, Portraiture, Genre, Landscape and Still-Life.
What does Genre art mean?
The representation of scenes or events from everyday life, such as markets, domestic settings, interiors, parties, inn scenes, work, and street scenes. Such representations may be realistic, imagined, or romanticised by the artist.
What does Gaiety mean?
The state or quality of being light-hearted or cheerful (happy).
What does Moral rectitude mean?
Having high/strong morals.
What does Contemporary mean?
Modern/current for that time.
What is Linear Perspective?
A system of creating an illusion of depth on a flat surface. All parallel lines in a painting or drawing using this system converge in a single vanishing point on the composition’s horizon line.
What is Composition?
How it’s laid out.
What does Monumental scale mean/
Each figure is life-size.
What does Delineating mean?
Describe or portray (something) precisely and indicate the exact position.
What does Homage mean?
Special honour or respect shown publicly.
What does Chiaroscuro mean?
Highlights and shadows.
What is Gendered representation?
The different ways in which the male and female figures are represented.
What is tonal modelling?
A single continuous outline drawing before working on white highlights and shadow to make the figures look three-dimensional.
