topic 1: goldschmidt's classification Flashcards
What is Goldschmidt’s classification based off?
How the elements are commonly found (combined with other elements.)
What is an Atomphile?
“Gas loving” : elements that are generally extremely volatile and are concentrated in the atmosphere and hydrosphere.
Give an example of what an Atomphile may be.
A gas or a liquid.
Where might an Atomphile be found?
Atmosphere and Hydrosphere.
What is an Lithophile?
“Rock loving” : elements that tend to form silicates and are concentrated in the silicate portion of the Earth.
Where might a Lithophile be found?
Crust and mantle.
What is an Siderophile?
“Iron-loving” : elements that have an affinity for a metallic liquid phase.
Where might a Siderophile be found?
In the Earth’s core.
What is an Chalcophile?
“Ore-loving” : elements that have an affinity for a sulphide liquid phase.
Where might a Chalcophile be found?
Concentrated towards the core.
What class is found in the atmosphere?
Atomphile.
What class is found in the core?
Siderophile.
What class is found both in the crust and the mantle?
Lithophile.
What class is found towards the core?
Chalcophile.
