What is lustre?
The way a mineral reflects light off of it’s surface.
What are the common types of lustre?
metallic, vitreous (glassy), pearly or dull.
What is streak?
The colour of a minerals powder.
How do you test for streak?
Rubbing a mineral specimen on an unglazed white porcelain tile.
What are the two possible results of streak test?
Will leave behind a powdery streak or will scratch the tile.
What is hardness?
Resistance of a mineral to being scratched and is measured on Mohs scale.
How hard is a mineral if it can be scratched by a fingernail?
< 2.5
How hard is a mineral if it can be scratched by a penny?
< 3.5
How hard is a mineral if it can be scratched by a nail?
< 5.5
How hard is a mineral if it cannot be scratched by a nail?
over 5.5
How hard is a mineral if it can scratch glass?
above 6.5
What is cleavage?
The way a mineral breaks or splits when under pressure.
What is it called when a mineral with no cleavage breaks?
Fracture.
Give an example of a mineral with no cleavage.
Quartz.
