Topic 1- Forces Flashcards
What are balanced forces?
- When two forces acting on an object are equal in size but act in opposite directions
- If the forces on an object are balanced (or if there are no forces acting on it) this is what happens:
- an object that is not moving stays still
- an object that is moving continues to move at the same speed and in the same direction
What are unbalanced forces?
*When two forces acting on an object are not equal in size and act in the same direction
- If the forces on an object are unbalanced this is what happens:
- an object that is not moving starts to move
- an object that is moving changes speed or direction
Whats the difference between equal forces and balanced forces?
Balanced forces- same size, opposite directions
Equal forces- not specific
What is the definition of the term equilibrium?
When all the forces that act upon an object are balanced, then the object is said to be in a state of equilibrium.
Whats Hooke’s law?
Force is proportional to extension up to the elastic limit
F= -k ( sprint constant) x
what can a force be used for?
to stretch, compress and bend objects
what does g stand for
gravitational field strenth
give the definition of mass
how much matter ‘ stuff’ you are made of ( measured in kg)
give the definition of weight and the unit
a force caused by gravity acting on your mass ( measured in N)
how do you calculate weight?
weight (N)= mass (kg)* gravitational filed strength ( N/kg)
g on Earth = 10 N/kg
give the equation for Force
F=ma
give the definition of upthrust
the upward force that a liquid or gas exerts on a body floating in it.
what happens to the acceleration when the forces are balanced
a = 0
