Topic 1- Extra Definitions Flashcards
What are alkali metals?
The elements in group 1 of the periodic table.
What is an atomic nucleus?
Positively charged object composed of protons and neutrons at the centre of every atom with one or more electrons orbiting it.
What is an electron?
Negatively charges subatomic particle which orbit the nucleus at various energy levels electrons have a very small relative mass.
What is an electron shell?
Different energy levels in Atoms occupied by electrons.
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is a group in the periodic table?
The columns of the periodic table represent different groups of elements. Elements with similar properties are in the same group.
What are Halogens?
Halogens are the elements in group 7 of the periodic table.
What is an ion?
An ion is an atom or molecule with an electrical charge due to the loss of gain of electrons.
What are metals in the periodic table?
Metals are elements that react to form positive ions, they are found to the left and towards the bottom of the periodic table.
What is a neutron?
A neutron is a neutral subatomic particle present in the nucleus of the atom with a relative mass of 1.
What are noble gases?
Noble gases are elements in group 0 of the periodic table.
What are non-metals in the periodic table?
Elements that react to form negative ions they are found towards the right and top of the periodic table.
What is the nuclear model?
The nuclear atomic model stated that the mass was concentrated at the centre of the atom and that the nucleus was charged.
What is the periodic table?
The periodic table is a table of elements arranged in order of atomic number and elements with similar properties are in the same column (group).
What is a proton?
A Proton is a positively charged subatomic particle present in the nucleus of the atom it has a relative mass of 1.
